Helikon Gallery & Studios was a family-owned and operated contemporary art venue located in the River North (RiNo) Art District. From 2013 until its closure in 2019, Helikon Gallery had garnered a reputation as a high level exhibition space for contemporary Illustrative Arts, ranging from portraiture, illustration, and figure work to imaginative and narrative art from the United States and abroad.

The building was a 10,000 square foot, two floor repurposed warehouse comprised of two art galleries, 14 artists’ studios, a coffee bar & retail space, and a classroom space. We hosted nearly two dozen exhibits throughout the year, rotating every 4 – 6 weeks, and were also available as private event space.

We welcomed visitors of all backgrounds, regardless of your familiarity or experience in the arts. Entry was always free during regular business hours, and visitors were not required to spend money. Art Galleries function effectively as public services – conduits to culture where we can absorb and admire artwork, design, and aesthetics. For those who are looking to begin or expand a collection of art, we offered original works and prints appropriate for budgets large and small, including an expansive array of work by local artists and in-house studio artists, enamel pins, vinyl toys, art books, and rarities.

We curated our exhibits to feature artwork that exists at the intersection of illustration and fine art, resulting in a unique blend of art that’s not often seen in regional galleries. It’s a genre we called the Illustrative Arts, ranging from figurative art,  contemporary landscape, imaginative art, narrative art, and personal works by professional illustrators whose art is often seen in well known publications.

Our gallery most commonly showcased painting, drawing, prints, digital art, and small scale sculptures. We utilized two gallery spaces, the shop, and the hallways to constantly feature a rotating display of artwork from Colorado and across the world.

Our primary exhibit space and the largest feature of the building, the main gallery is a 1,400 square foot space. The space is designed to weave into the existing architectural features seamlessly. Featuring a two story open ceiling with an exposed century-old steel roof structure, an interior balcony, and a large glass garage door, it imparts exhibits with a gritty, understated elegance.

Known as Gallery 101, the annex space is a 400 square foot complement to the main gallery. Its manageable size makes it an ideal venue for everything from small solo exhibits to densely packed group shows. The space is designed to conceal ample amounts of storage, including custom designed vertical storage racks and shelving behind drywall doors.

Our retail shop and coffee bar is always open alongside the galleries. We brew locally roasted coffee and espresso by Novo and stock a variety of affordable art prints, specialty art books, sculpture, designer toys, greeting cards, pins, stickers and more.

Our in-house shop has a large selection of art for any budget, from small artist-made cards and toys, to rare books, handmade jewelry, and original paintings. Visitors can enjoy samplings of work from previous exhibits as well as features of work by artists we frequently exhibit.

Helikon also comprises 14 fully enclosed art studios on the second floor, built to the same quality specifications as the gallery. Plus, open studio opportunities mean that many Helikon artists are present for openings and other events, giving visitors the chance to see a wide range of styles and to speak with artists about their art.
